Two-Column Resume Templates

A two-column resume puts your skills, languages, and awards in a narrow sidebar and your experience in the main column. It reads dense and looks organized, which is why people reach for it. Pick it when you have a long skills list that would eat vertical space in a single column, or when a recruiter will scan the page before any software touches it. If a human is the first reader, the sidebar works in your favor: they see your stack at a glance. If you are applying through a portal you do not control, be more careful. The layout that helps a recruiter can hurt you with an older parser.

Here is the concrete failure. Older ATS parsers do not see columns. They read the page in raw reading order, left to right, top to bottom, and flatten everything into one text stream. When that happens to a two-column resume, your sidebar can interleave with your main column. A skills list meant to sit beside your first job can land in the middle of that job's description. The parser then reads 'Led migration to' followed by 'Python, Kubernetes, Postgres' followed by the rest of your bullet. Your experience becomes noise, and the keyword match that decides whether a human sees you at all runs against garbled text. This is a real risk, not a theoretical one, and you often cannot tell which parser a company uses. The PDF export is selectable text, not an image, so the parser has real characters to read. Still, if the posting is at a large company with an unknown ATS, run it through our ATS score first, or tailor a single-column version for that application.
