When to pick a minimal resume

Minimal means one thing here: nothing on the page competes with your words. No sidebar, no color blocks, no icons standing in for section titles. If your experience is strong and you want a recruiter to read it in order, top to bottom, this is the safe pick. It is also the right call when you do not know which parser sits on the other side of the application. A single column with plain headings survives almost anything.

The trade is real. With no sidebar and no accent bars, everything relies on typography and spacing to signal hierarchy. A recruiter scanning for six seconds has fewer visual anchors, so your section order and your first line of each role have to carry more weight. Lead with the job title and company, not a paragraph of prose.

How minimal layouts behave in an ATS

Single-column layouts parse cleanly because there is only one reading order. The parser walks the document top to bottom and gets your sections in the order you wrote them. There is no risk of a column being read out of sequence, which is the failure mode that interleaves your skills list with your job titles on two-column designs.

Watch the density. Minimal templates tempt you to pack the page, because there is so much white space to fill. Keep real section headings as text, not images, and keep dates in a consistent format on every role. Run the ATS score after you import your content, not before, so it reads your actual bullet points.

The minimal template in our gallery

There is exactly one template in this category: ATS Minimal. It uses a centered masthead for your name and contact line, then a single column of sections below with a slate accent for the headings. Clean typography, subtle structure, nothing else. It is built to parse and to read fast.

Import your existing PDF in about a minute, or start from a base resume and tailor it to a specific posting. Drag blocks to reorder sections, watch the ATS score respond, then export a selectable-text PDF that a parser can actually read. If you later want a skills sidebar or a stronger header, our two-column and modern categories cover that; minimal stays deliberately plain.
