Roleframe vs Canva
a branch per job beats a duplicated artboard

Roleframe branches one master resume into a tailored version for every posting, so order, emphasis and layout move with the job. The editor opens with no account. Around it sit a per-section ATS score, a tracker with the recruiters beside it, and Remi, the assistant that has read your resume, that report and the posting and fixes any finding as a word-by-word diff you approve. Canva Pro runs US$180 a year as of 2 September 2026, where Roleframe's editor and unwatermarked PDF cost nothing; take Canva when the resume is a design sample.

Why people switch

The features that do the work.

Roleframe puts the tailoring, the per-section score, the tracker and the contacts around a document built to be read by software, where Canva puts a resume on a general design canvas.

01Editor

Typographic control, inside a document

Roleframe's freedom is typographic and it sits inside a document model, so fonts, spacing, colors, per-section layouts and page breaks are all yours on every plan, including the anonymous one, without leaving the ATS-safe envelope. Canva's freedom is placement freedom: any element at any coordinate in a Layers panel, with no document underneath it.

  • 40 section layouts across the section types, so one Experience block can be arranged several ways.
  • Custom sections with use-case presets, plus page breaks you place yourself.
  • The PDF renders from the document you edited, so what you arranged is what downloads.

02Branches

One master, a version per job

Three weeks into a search you have twelve Canva duplicates. Copy four holds the better summary you wrote at midnight, copy nine is the only one with the phone number fixed, and no path leads from a new idea back into the other eleven. Roleframe keeps one master per role and makes each application a branch off it, on a board a free Chrome extension fills from the posting you are viewing in one click.

  • Editing a branch never touches the master or the other branches.
  • Improving the master flows into the versions you already tailored.
  • Saved, applied, interviewing, offer, each holding the exact branch you sent and the recruiter you sent it to.

03Scoring

Section-level, before you send

On a Canva page a section is a cluster of text boxes that happen to sit near each other, and the resume product returns no score of any kind. In Roleframe a section is an object in the document model, so weak wording, a thin bullet and a missing number each pin to the block they came from.

  • The summary, the skills block and a single bullet each get their own verdict.
  • Deterministic checks run beside the AI review: headings, dates, titles and layout parse risk.
  • Importing a resume runs the analysis without being asked, and every finding it raises carries a Fix with AI button that hands it to Remi.

04Keywords

See the terms the posting wants

Roleframe reads the posting, names the terms your resume never uses, ranks the fixes, and puts Remi in the editor sidebar: an assistant that has read your resume section by section, that report and that posting. Ask it to rewrite a section or a single bullet and it shows a word-by-word diff, and nothing lands until you approve it. Canva's Apps panel holds a Job And Resume AI app that takes your resume text and a job description and hands back suggestions, with no score, no named gaps and no record of what changed.

  • Keyword coverage arrives with the gaps listed rather than as a percentage on its own, and Remi closes a named gap with wording drawn from your real experience, never invented.
  • Fix with AI sits on every finding in the report. Apply it and that finding is marked resolved, and the live score moves by exactly what it cost.
  • Interview prep closes the report, built from your own experience and that specific posting, and Remi runs a practice interview from the resume as it stands, one question at a time, feedback on each answer, a score at the end.

Meet Remi, your career copilot

An AI assistant that has read your resume and your report, and still asks before it changes a word.

Remi lives in the editor sidebar with your analysis already loaded: the score, every open finding, the keywords the posting asks for that you are missing, and the job itself. Ask what to fix first and it answers like a recruiter who switched sides, plainly, with a number instead of an adjective, and ends with the one thing worth doing next. Then it does it, one approved change at a time.

  • It reads the resume itself
No pasting into a chat box. Remi opens any section of the document you are about to send, by name.
  • It starts from your report
The score, every open finding and the reason behind each point come with it, so it knows what to fix first.
  • It knows the gaps by name
The keywords the posting asks for that your resume never uses, so a rewrite closes a specific one instead of guessing.
  • Fix with AI on every finding
One button hands a finding to Remi. Apply the fix and it is marked resolved, and your score moves by exactly what it cost.
  • Every edit is a diff you approve
Word by word, what goes and what arrives, before anything touches the page. Approval is enforced in the tool, not by convention.
  • Practice interviews on demand
Questions written from your resume as it stands today, one at a time, with feedback on each answer and a score at the end.

05Privacy

Your history, and your approval on every edit

Roleframe's resume editor opens with no account, so a first draft can exist before you hand over anything, where building and downloading a Canva design takes one. Roleframe is run from the EU under the GDPR, does not sell user data, and does not use your resume content to train general-purpose AI models. Remi's edits land only at the point you approve them.

  • Every change Remi proposes is a word-by-word diff you accept or discard, one at a time, with approval enforced in the tool itself.
  • AI runs on an explicit action, never quietly in the background.
  • You can export and delete your data, and GDPR requests go to an EU company.
06Export

Free at the download button

Roleframe's PDF is a render of the document you edited, with real selectable text, no watermark and no branding of ours, free on every plan including the anonymous one. Canva Free downloads a clean PDF too, and the difference sits under Advanced Settings, where Flatten PDF converts the design to a static image and removes accessibility tagging, leaving a resume with no extractable text.

  • The same document renders the export, so the order you authored is the order that downloads.
  • The PDF is the same file on every plan, with no watermark tier and no resolution tier to buy.
  • Canva Free downloads without a watermark provided the design uses free templates and free elements.
The tracker

Every application, and the resume that went with it.

Saved, applied, interviewing, offer. The board comes with a free account, and so does the contact list and the extension that fills it.

The Roleframe job tracker: a pipeline bar with per-stage counts above rows grouped by status, showing the Job Position, Company, Max. Salary, Location, Status, Date Saved, Deadline, Date Applied, Follow up and Excitement columns
  • The version you actually sent, attached

Each role holds the tailored branch that went to it, so a callback three weeks later does not start with guessing which resume they read.

  • The people, beside the jobs

A contact tracker rather than a notes field: a recruiter links to every role you have with them, carries your own tags, and edits in place.

  • One click from the posting

The free Chrome extension files the job you are reading straight into the board, with the full description and the recruiter contacts kept alongside it.

The honest verdict

Which one is right for you.

Roleframe is built for the software that reads the resume first and the search that runs after it, with Remi beside the page to fix what the score finds. That is the pick wherever you apply online; Canva takes it where the page itself is the point.

RRoleframeBest overall

Choose Roleframe if

  • You want an ATS score per section with the reason behind each point, the missing keywords named against the posting, and Remi, which has read that report, your resume and the posting, to rewrite the weak section as a diff you approve, with Fix with AI on every finding. Canva's resume product offers none of it.
  • Duplicating a design per job has stopped scaling, and a fix to the master should reach the versions you already tailored.
  • Most of your applications go through an online portal, and you want the reading order authored rather than calculated at export, in a PDF that costs nothing, carries no watermark and needs no account to download.
  • The exact version you sent should still be attached to the application when somebody calls six weeks later, with the recruiter who called on the same board, and a practice interview Remi writes from your current resume before you pick up.
CCanvaBest for portfolio resumes

Choose Canva if

  • Choose Canva if the resume is itself a work sample, as it is for design, brand and art-direction roles: around 20,000 resume templates, 3,000+ fonts, and a canvas with no envelope around it.
  • Choose Canva if what you need is the printed stack. Canva Print ships it, with free standard delivery in up to 8 business days and in-store pickup at FedEx Office in the US and Staples in Canada.
  • Choose Canva if you work from a phone, or if one account should also make the deck and the banner from the same 4.7M+ free photos, videos, graphics and audio.

Where it stops

  • Canva's accessibility docs say PDF reading order is automatically calculated on export and works best for simple, linear layouts, and its own resume FAQ tells you to avoid text boxes, tables and images.
  • Flatten PDF under Advanced Settings converts the design to a static image and removes accessibility tagging, so a resume ticked that way reaches a parser with no extractable text at all.
  • The Design Accessibility checker flags small text, low contrast and missing alt text and nothing else: no ATS score, keyword match rate or gap report exists anywhere in the resume product.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Roleframe actually free, or free until I hit download?

Yes, free right at the download. The resume editor opens at /resume-builder with no account and no card, every template and every design control included, and the PDF has real selectable text and no watermark. Canva Free is genuinely free at export too, and it wants an account before you build and download. A free Roleframe account adds saved work, the job tracker, the contact tracker holding the recruiters and hiring managers beside those jobs, the free Chrome extension that saves the posting you are viewing in one click, one master resume, one tailored branch, one cover letter and a few full runs of Remi on the open document. Unlimited masters and branches are the paid plans, with unlimited everyday AI on Premium and a generous daily allowance on Lifetime, priced on /pricing.

What does Canva cost in practice?

Canva Free costs US$0 a year for one person as of 2 September 2026 and downloads PDFs at 96 or 300 dpi with no watermark, provided the design uses free templates and free elements. Canva Pro is US$180 per year for one person, charged up front, and Canva Business is US$250 per year per person, both as of 2 September 2026. Those are US prices excluding tax, and Canva prices in local currency by region. No monthly figure is published on the pricing page. Trial length is not published, and a trial converts unless you cancel.

Can I move my Canva resume into Roleframe?

Yes. Download the design as a PDF, which Canva Free does at 96 or 300 dpi, then import that file. Roleframe returns it as editable blocks with roles, dates and bullets in the right places, and runs the analysis on it automatically, with Fix with AI on each finding it raises. One thing to check first: if you ticked Flatten PDF under Advanced Settings, the file is a static image with no extractable text, so download an unflattened copy instead. A free account includes one import.

Will a Roleframe resume pass an ATS?

It gives an ATS nothing to trip on. An applicant tracking system (ATS) reads the file you send, and that file is the document you built: the PDF is a render of the same document, not a second approximate layout. It exports as real selectable text, not a picture of a page, and never a flattened image. Every template keeps standard section headings and a clean reading order, on every plan. Roleframe scores each section for parse risk, structure, headings and keyword alignment against the posting you paste, and Remi fixes any finding as a diff you approve, so problems are fixed before you send.

What does Remi do inside Roleframe's editor?

Remi is the assistant in the editor sidebar, and it works on the document you have open rather than on text you paste into a chat. It reads any section by name, the analysis report with the reason behind each point, and the linked posting. Ask for a rewrite of a section or a single bullet and it shows a word-by-word diff; nothing lands until you approve it. Fix with AI sits on every finding, and applying one moves the score by what that finding cost. Remi also runs a practice interview from your current resume, one question at a time, with a score when you finish. The Job And Resume AI app in Canva's Apps panel hands back suggestions, with no report behind them. A free account includes a few full runs of Remi.

Is Canva ever the better choice?

Sometimes, and this page will not pretend otherwise. If the resume is itself a work sample, as it is for design, brand and art-direction roles, Canva's canvas beats an ATS-safe envelope. Take Canva for the career fair, where somebody holds your page for eight seconds, and for the printed stack Canva Print will ship you. Take it if you work mostly from a phone. For the version that goes into an online application, Roleframe is the default: you author the reading order, the score comes back per section, Remi fixes what it finds as a diff you approve, and the copy you sent stays attached to the job.

Do I lose anything by starting free?

Not on the document. Every template, every design control and unlimited watermark-free PDF downloads are the same on the free tier as on the paid one, and the job tracker, the contact tracker and the one-click Chrome extension all come with a free account. What free caps is volume: one master resume, one tailored branch, one cover letter and a few full AI runs, Remi included, enough to judge the output. Unlimited masters and branches are the paid plans, with unlimited everyday AI on Premium and a generous daily allowance on Lifetime. Nothing is rationed monthly the way Canva's AI allowance is.
