Nursing Resume Template: Section Order for Students, New Grads and Experienced RNs
On this page

A useful nursing resume makes your education, licensure and clinical experience easy to find. A student can lead with education and rotations; a licensed new graduate can show current licensure alongside clinical training; an experienced RN can emphasize relevant unit experience.

This page gives three fill-in structures, plus unit-specific prompts. ANCC’s credential-order guidance and the University of Minnesota’s nursing resume checklist provide supporting references. The templates are writing aids, not evidence that you hold a credential or are qualified for a particular assignment.

Section order by career stage

Career stageSection order, top to bottom
Nursing studentHeader, one-line objective, education, clinical rotations, healthcare and other work, skills and certifications
New grad RNHeader with licensure status, licensure and certifications, clinical rotations and capstone, education, healthcare work, skills
Experienced RNHeader with credentials, licensure and certifications, experience by unit (newest first), education, skills

The logic is the same one that governs every resume: lead with your strongest proof. For a student that is education, for an experienced RN it is the license and the units worked. If you want the reasoning behind the pattern, the guide to resume section order covers it for every experience level.

Nursing student resume template

This template fits you if you are still in school and applying for externships, nurse tech jobs or a first RN role ahead of graduation. Education leads because it is your strongest credential. Clinical rotations are your experience section, and each one deserves the same detail a job would get: facility, unit, dates and hours.

Label clinical rotations as student training and keep them separate from paid healthcare work. A CNA or patient care tech job is employment; give it its own section so it reads that way.

Copy these lines and replace every bracket:

  • Header: [First Last] | [City, State] | [Phone] | [Email]
  • Objective, one line: "Nursing student ([BSN/ADN] expected [Month Year]) seeking a [nurse extern / patient care tech] role on [unit type]; [X] clinical hours completed, BLS certified through [Month Year]."
  • Education: [Degree], [School], expected [Month Year]; GPA [X.XX] (include only if it helps you); [honors or relevant coursework]
  • Clinical rotations, one entry per rotation: [Unit], [Hospital], [City], [Month Year] to [Month Year], [X] hours. One bullet each: "Cared for [X] patients per shift under preceptor supervision; performed [assessments / medication passes / wound care] and charted in [EMR system]."
  • Healthcare and other work: [CNA / PCT / caregiver title], [Employer], [Month Year] to [Month Year]. "[What you did, for how many patients or residents, with what result]."
  • Skills and certifications: BLS ([expiration]); [EMR system]; [clinical skills such as vitals, phlebotomy, Foley care]; [languages]

New grad nurse resume template

Make your actual licensure status easy to locate. "RN, [State], License #[number]" if it has been issued. "Nursing graduate; NCLEX scheduled [Month Year]" if it has not, using an exam date only after it is confirmed. Titles such as Graduate Nurse may be regulated locally; use one only when authorized. State an application as pending only if it has been submitted.

Your capstone or preceptorship is the closest thing you have to nursing employment, so it leads the rotations section and gets more detail than the rest: the hours, the unit, and how your assignment grew over the placement.

Copy these lines and replace every bracket:

  • Header: [First Last], RN | [City, State] | [Phone] | [Email] (if the license is not issued yet: [First Last], [earned degree]; nursing graduate)
  • Licensure and certifications: RN, [State], License #[number], active. Or: "RN licensure application submitted [Month Year]; NCLEX [scheduled date or accurate current status]." Then BLS ([expiration]) and ACLS ([expiration]) if you hold it
  • Clinical rotations and capstone, capstone first: [X]-hour preceptorship, [Unit], [Hospital], [Month Year] to [Month Year]. Two bullets: "Assisted with a [X]-patient assignment under the supervision of an RN preceptor" and "[A specific clinical situation you handled, charted in [EMR system]]." Then the remaining rotations, one line each
  • Education: [BSN/ADN], [School], [Month Year]; [honors]
  • Healthcare work: [CNA / PCT role], [Employer], [Month Year] to [Month Year], one bullet on patient load and duties
  • Skills: [EMR system]; [clinical skills]; [languages]

Experienced RN resume template

Use the appropriate credentials after your name, show current certification status and identify the facility and unit for each role. List specialty certifications such as CCRN or CEN only if they are current. Credentials are easy to verify, and an expired one on the page costs more than its absence would.

Where relevant and verifiable, describe assignment size, patient population and your contribution. "Provided patient care" describes every nurse in the building; "carried 1:5 assignments on a 32-bed telemetry floor and precepted four new grads" describes you.

Copy these lines and replace every bracket:

  • Header: [First Last], [BSN/MSN], RN, [specialty certification initials you currently hold] | [City, State] | [Phone] | [Email]
  • Summary, two lines max: "[Specialty] RN with [X] years across [unit types]; [charge / preceptor / committee role] with [one concrete result]."
  • Licensure and certifications: RN, [State], License #[number], expires [Month Year]; [multistate/compact license if you hold one]; BLS ([expiration]); ACLS ([expiration]); [specialty certification, only if current] ([expiration])
  • Experience, newest first: [Unit], [Hospital] ([bed count], [trauma level or Magnet designation if accurate]), [City], [Month Year] to present. Three to five bullets: "[Carried [1:X] assignments on a [X]-bed unit]"; "[Precepted [X] new grads / served as relief charge [X] shifts a month]"; "[A documented contribution or result you can substantiate, with team attribution where appropriate]"
  • Education: [Degree], [School], [Year]
  • Skills: [EMR system] ([X] years); [specialized equipment: ventilators, CRRT, fetal monitoring]; [languages]

Name the electronic record system and describe your level of experience accurately.

Unit-specific experience lines

Use these as optional writing prompts, not standard staffing ratios or clinical instructions. Include only duties you performed within your role and authorization, under the supervision required. Replace every bracket with verified facts; omit a line that does not apply:

A young nurse and a manager review a nursing resume organized into ICU and Med-Surg experience sections.
UnitLine to adapt
ICU"Managed 1:[verified ratio] care for ventilated patients on titrated drips in a [X]-bed [MICU/SICU/CVICU]; [CRRT / post-open-heart recovery / rapid response] if applicable."
Emergency"Triaged and treated [X] patients per shift across all ESI levels in a [X]-bed ED with [trauma level] designation; [procedural sedation / stroke alerts] if applicable."
Med-surg"Carried a [verified number]-patient assignment on a [X]-bed [surgical/telemetry] floor; managed admissions, discharges and post-op care across [X] admissions per shift."
Pediatrics"Provided family-centered care for patients aged [range] on a [X]-bed unit; calculated and double-checked weight-based medication doses."
Labor and delivery"Supported [X] deliveries per month; interpreted fetal monitoring strips, assisted vaginal and cesarean births, and recovered mothers and newborns."

To see lines like these inside a complete document, the registered nurse resume example walks through a full resume section by section. For what belongs in the skills section for each specialty, use the nursing skills by unit guide.

Formatting rules that apply to all three templates

  • Use a simple layout with clear headings, then inspect the application’s extracted fields where available. No layout guarantees accurate ATS parsing.
  • Use credentials only when earned and authorized. Match the issuing body’s title and current status; add license numbers where requested.
  • Use one consistent date format for jobs, rotations and credentials.
  • Protect patient privacy and employer-confidential information. Even unnamed cases or small-group outcomes may identify someone; use approved, nonidentifying details.
  • Follow the requested file format. Check a PDF after export and upload rather than assuming it displays or parses perfectly.

Template or resume builder?

A template gives you a starting structure. You still need to choose accurate evidence for each job. Keep a master record of dates, rotations and credentials, then tailor the emphasis without changing the facts.

In Roleframe’s resume builder, you can organize versions and use available checks while editing. Suggestions about wording or missing keywords are prompts for your review, not confirmation of clinical qualifications or eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free nursing resume template?

Yes. The three fill-in templates on this page are free to copy into any document, and plenty of free single-column layouts exist in Word, Google Docs and online builders. The design matters far less than the order: license and certifications near the top, experience by unit, one column. A plain document that follows that order beats a decorated template that buries the license.

Should a nursing resume be one page or two?

One page is a useful starting point for many students and new graduates. Use a second page when relevant experience or application requirements justify it. Follow the employer’s instructions and remove repetition before shrinking the type.

Do clinical rotations count as work experience?

Clinical rotations are relevant experience, but label them clearly as education or supervised placements. Keep paid healthcare roles in an employment section and describe the level of supervision accurately in both.

Should I put my license number on my resume?

Show the license type, issuing state and accurate current status. Include the number when requested. Avoid presenting an application or scheduled exam as an issued license.

What makes a nursing resume different from other resumes?

Relevant licensure and certification, clinical setting and scope of experience need to be clear. Describe the unit and activities you performed, distinguish student placements from employment, and protect patient privacy.
