An investment banking resume should make it easy to identify what you built, the context, and your actual contribution. A concise one-page version is a useful starting point for a student application, but the employer’s instructions and relevant experience should determine the final length and format.
This guide includes a fictional student example, prompts for organizing the page, and worked deal and modeling bullets. It also covers confidentiality, grades, credentials, and how to adjust the evidence for a lateral application.
A complete investment banking resume for summer analyst recruiting
For a student application, use internships, analytical projects, coursework, and other work that demonstrates relevant skills. The strength of the evidence matters more than a fixed ranking of experience types.
The sample is a fictional September 2025 snapshot of a junior expecting to graduate in May 2027 and considering 2026 internships. The person, career history, financial figures, and credentials are illustrative. Some institution and credential names are real; no attendance, award, placement result, or investment performance is verified. Program eligibility and recruiting dates must be checked against the actual opening.
Reading the example section by section
Header: four pieces of information, nothing else
Use your name, location, phone, professional email, and a useful profile link. Keep contact information as text and test links after export. Include additional personal information only when the application asks for it.
The embedded example preserves a skills-column template and a short summary. For a compact application version, consider a simpler layout and remove sections that repeat information. Check the actual export rather than assuming this preview is a one-page or parser-certified template.
Education first, while you are a student or new graduate
Education often makes sense near the top for students because expected graduation and study background help explain program fit. State the institution, degree, expected or completed graduation date, and any requested grade information accurately.
Select coursework relevant to the opening, such as accounting, valuation, or statistics. As professional evidence becomes stronger, you can place experience first. There is no fixed one-year rule; follow program requirements and choose the order that presents the evidence clearly.
Experience: show relevant analytical work and responsibility
Use a clear employer or organization, title, location if helpful, and month-year dates. Within each section, reverse chronology is easy to follow. Select a few specific bullets for the most relevant work.
Student fund analysis can sit in a clearly labeled projects, student experience, or leadership section. Distinguish it from paid bank employment. Explain what you analyzed and produced rather than relying on the title alone.
Leadership and activities
Leadership can demonstrate coordination, preparation, and follow-through. Name an event, series, budget, or process you handled and describe your contribution. A number helps only when it clarifies real scope; every bullet does not need one.
The last line: skills, certifications and interests
Choose relevant modeling methods and platforms you can use: for example, Excel, PowerPoint, comparable-company analysis, or a research platform from your internship. Describe limited course exposure honestly. A long tool list is not a substitute for a specific example of analysis.
A short interests line is optional. Include genuine interests you would be comfortable discussing and keep them concise enough to leave room for relevant work.
The investment banking resume template, line by line
Use these prompts to build a compact draft, then adapt it to the employer, country, and application instructions. “IB resume” and “investment banking CV” can refer to the same purpose, but format conventions are not identical in every market.
- Header line 1: FULL NAME, in the largest type on the page.
- Header line 2: City, State | Phone | Email | LinkedIn URL. One line, plain text, no icons.
- EDUCATION. University name and city/state on the left, expected or actual graduation month and year right aligned.
- Degree, major, and relevant honors or coursework. Add grades and their scale where requested or useful; label cumulative and major figures distinctly.
- WORK EXPERIENCE (use PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE once you are post-graduation). Firm name and city/state left, month-year to month-year right.
- Accurate job title, then focused bullets explaining your contribution and supported output or result.
- Repeat for each role, most recent first. Give the most banking-adjacent role the most bullets.
- LEADERSHIP & ACTIVITIES. Organization, role, dates, and a small number of specific contributions.
- SKILLS, CREDENTIALS & INTERESTS. Relevant methods and platforms, accurate earned credentials or clearly labeled exam progress, and optional interests.
- Follow the required file type. Inspect the export and populated application fields; use PDF or DOCX as instructed.
Omit a summary if it merely repeats education and experience. Keep a short one if it helps explain your focus or transition, as in the sample. There is no universal ban on objectives or summaries.
Use readable type, spacing, and consistent alignment. Start with a simple layout and avoid squeezing important evidence into tiny text. Inspect the exported page count and reading order; a layout recommendation is not an ATS guarantee.
How to write deal and modeling bullets
Build a bullet from the work: action, method or deliverable, relevant context, and supported result. A transaction’s value is not your personal impact, and participation is not leadership.
Use terms such as DCF, comparable-company analysis, precedent transactions, or a confidential information memorandum only if they describe your contribution. A method listed in skills is stronger when linked to a project or task you can explain. Where transaction details are restricted, describe a permitted analytical deliverable instead.
Four weak lines and what to write instead
All figures below are illustrative and fictional. Swap in your own.
| Weak | Stronger | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| "Assisted with M&A transactions for clients in the industrials sector." | "Built and maintained comparable company and precedent transaction analyses for a sell-side process for a regional industrial manufacturer (approx. $150M enterprise value); screened 40+ strategic and sponsor buyers for the outreach list." | Names the deliverable, the process type, the scale, and the piece that was yours. |
| "Responsible for financial modeling and valuation." | "Built a three-statement operating model and a DCF for a packaging company, running five revenue cases that set the valuation range used in the client discussion materials." | "Responsible for" describes a job description. The rewrite describes work. |
| "Helped prepare marketing materials for a deal." | "Drafted the industry overview and historical financials sections of a confidential information memorandum, and maintained the data room index across 300+ diligence documents." | Specifies which sections and which part of the diligence workflow, so an interviewer can ask real questions. |
| "Led the sale of a healthcare services business." | "Supported a sell-side mandate for a healthcare services business; prepared management presentation materials and tracked buyer Q&A through second-round diligence." | The revision distinguishes supporting a process from leading the sale; use the level of responsibility you actually held. |
Confidentiality, without going vague
Check your firm’s policies, confidentiality obligations, and any required approvals before describing a client or transaction. Sector, approximate size, and process stage can identify a deal even when the client name is omitted. Public announcement does not authorize disclosure of internal analyses or your firm’s nonpublic role.
Use only permitted detail. If a transaction cannot be described safely, explain the general task or method without disclosing its identity, status, documents, or economics. Rounding a value or giving a range is not an automatic solution. Keep “built,” “reviewed,” “supported,” and “led” aligned with your actual responsibility.
Describe real automation work precisely
If you automated a reporting or modeling task, state the input, checks, output, and contribution. Illustrative example: “Built an approved data-import workflow for a comparable-company workbook, adding source and reconciliation checks before analyst review.” Add a measured time saving only if records support it.
Distinguish ordinary scripting from AI use. For AI-assisted work, identify what you validated and use only tools and data handling approved by the firm. AI experience is not a general requirement for a banking resume.
The lateral analyst resume, built around selected transactions
A lateral application can lead with relevant professional experience and a short Selected Transactions section if you have permitted deals to discuss. Show promotions and the scope of your own work. Education can take less space as experience grows.
The following structure is a starting point, not a required format:

The lateral layout, line by line
- Header, identical to the student version. Name, then one plain line with city and state, phone, email and LinkedIn.
- PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE first. Bank name and city/state on the left, month-year range right aligned.
- Your title on its own line. If you were promoted, show both titles with their dates so the progression reads at a glance.
- Two or three bullets on the seat itself. What you build week to week, how many live processes you carry at once, the sectors or products your group covers.
- SELECTED TRANSACTIONS, if relevant and permitted. Use a few concise entries distinguishing your role and deal status.
- Earlier roles and internships below, two bullets each, with less detail the older they get.
- EDUCATION, cut to two or three lines. University, degree, graduation year, and GPA while it is recent and strong. Coursework comes off.
- CREDENTIALS. Distinguish exams passed, registrations held, professional designations, and course completion.
- SKILLS & INTERESTS, one line each. The modeling and valuation methods you can defend, the platforms you touch daily, then a few specific interests.
- Keep it concise and follow the employer’s length and file instructions. A separate permitted deal sheet can provide requested detail.
These transaction lines are fictional writing examples, not disclosure templates. Use equivalent detail only when permitted, and replace every figure and responsibility with your own:
- Sell-side sale of a specialty distribution business to a strategic buyer, approx. $240M EV. Built the operating model, drafted the CIM and ran buyer Q&A through two diligence rounds.
- Buy-side mandate for a private equity sponsor in business services, approx. $95M EV. LBO model with three financing structures, plus the diligence tracker.
- $120M senior debt refinancing for a family-owned manufacturer. Lender materials and covenant sensitivity analysis.
- Sell-side process launched and withdrawn before signing, consumer products, approx. $180M EV. Full marketing materials and management presentation.
A withdrawn or uncompleted process can demonstrate real work if its disclosure is permitted and its status is clear. Do not imply a closing or personal ownership that did not occur.
A separate deal sheet can be useful when requested, subject to the same confidentiality checks. The resume and deal sheet should agree on scope, dates, and responsibility.
Licenses and certifications
Separate professional designations, exams, registrations, and course certificates. FINRA’s Series 79 page explains sponsorship and examination requirements; the SIE is a corequisite. Passing the SIE alone does not authorize securities business or establish registration. Confirm wording with your firm’s registration record.
For CFA Program progress, CFA Institute’s usage guidance distinguishes exam progress from charterholder status. Describe the level passed factually. Use candidate wording only when your current registration or results status qualifies; do not use CFA after your name merely for passing an exam level.
No banking experience yet? Build the proof you do have
Without banking employment, make the evidence you do have clear:
- Other paid work: describe accuracy, analysis, customer communication, or responsibility you actually demonstrated. Keep the original title.
- Self-directed modeling: label it as a project, name the public source data, and explain your model checks and assumptions. Do not present it as a client engagement.
- Student funds: state student status, your analytical contribution, and any permitted decision or result. Do not claim investment returns without a period, basis, and accurate attribution.
- Case competitions: distinguish a hypothetical case from a live transaction and name an award only if earned.
- Coursework: select relevant work that supports skills you can explain.
JPMorgan Chase’s application guidance includes coursework, internships, and projects as useful student evidence. Different programs have their own eligibility and application requirements.
Is a 3.6 GPA bad for investment banking?
There is no single GPA answer for every bank or program. Check the current opening for any stated minimum or requested academic information.
When grades are requested, provide the required measure accurately. Label major and cumulative GPA, include the scale, and do not substitute a stronger figure for a requested cumulative one. If you include an upward trend, identify its period and keep the calculation supportable. For another grading system, use the original scale or the conversion method the employer requests.
Analyst, associate, VP: what each level does and how the resume changes
Describe seniority through responsibility. Analyst work may include models, comparable-company analysis, research, and preparation of materials. More senior roles may add review, coordination, client communication, execution management, or origination. The allocation varies by team; the title alone does not prove you owned a transaction.
For a promotion, show title dates and what changed. For an MBA or career transition, connect previous experience to the target responsibilities without relabeling it as banking. Use the actual work to explain the move rather than implying that there are only three routes to associate roles.

What this page does not cover
This guide focuses on investment banking applications. Retail banking and teller roles involve a different mix of duties, so select evidence for the actual opening. If a letter is requested, use it to connect a few relevant examples to that role rather than repeating the resume.
Before you send it
Before sending, check names, dates, calculations, credential wording, confidentiality permissions, and your actual contribution to each result. Follow the employer’s length and file instructions, then review exported text and page breaks.
Keep a complete base resume and tailor relevant evidence for each application. The Roleframe account app supports tailored versions and job-match feedback; its score is not an employer’s ATS result or a hiring prediction. The free editor supports manual editing and PDF export.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the ideal CV format for investment banking?
Use a concise, readable layout with clear headings and dates. Education may lead for students; relevant experience may lead for laterals. A single-column version is a useful simple starting point, but follow the employer’s instructions and check the export. The embedded sample preserves a skills-column layout.
- Should an investment banking resume ever be two pages?
One page is a useful starting point for a junior application. Longer relevant experience or specific employer instructions may justify another length. A separate deal sheet can provide requested detail, subject to confidentiality approval.
- Do I need a resume objective for investment banking?
Skip an objective that only repeats the target job. A short summary or transition statement can be useful when it adds context. Spend the rest of the space on specific evidence.
- How do I list deal experience without breaking confidentiality?
Check firm policies, obligations, and required approvals. A sector, size, or process stage can identify a transaction even without a name. Public announcement and rounded figures do not automatically permit disclosure of internal details. Use a permitted general description when necessary.
- Should I list the CFA if I have only passed Level I?
You can factually state that you passed Level I of the CFA Program. That does not confer the charter or allow CFA after your name. Follow CFA Institute’s guidance for current candidate or charterholder wording.
- Is an IB resume the same thing as an investment banker resume?
The terms describe an application document for investment banking. “CV” is used in some markets, but local and employer-specific instructions can differ. Adapt the format instead of assuming one rule everywhere.
- Word or PDF, and do two-column templates work?
Follow the requested file type. Inspect the actual export, reading order, and application fields. A simpler column structure can reduce layout complexity, but neither PDF nor any template guarantees ATS parsing or selection.
- How many bullets should each role get?
Use a few focused bullets for the most relevant roles and less detail for older work. Three to five is a starting point, not a requirement. Explain actual tasks and outputs; every bullet does not need a commercial result.
